In December 2015, I left RHT Governance Risk AML Compliance Ethics Pte Ltd, the company I founded in 2014 with Adam Khan and Marjorie Sim that was acquired by RHTLaw TaylorWessing, the second largest law firm in Singapore. I had just accepted an offer to move back to Silicon Valley and the thought of raising my (then unborn) daughter out in sunny California was extremely appealing. However, due to some unforeseen personal circumstances, I had to turn down the offer and remain here in Singapore. It was a scary time but thankfully both mother and child are now doing great today. I am a firm believer in everything happening for a reason.
So what have I been up to since then? Well, “quite a bit” is the short answer. In addition to being a new dad (to describe this experience as “life-changing” is definitely no understatement to say the least!), I have been pursuing a combination of personal, business interests and a new full time role. On the personal front, I have:
a) Written, produced and recorded an album. In a former life I was a songwriter and as part of my personal “bucket list,” releasing an album was always a dream. I am proud to announce that this will soon become a reality!
In today’s world, where “micro-experiences” are increasingly gaining popularity (think purchasing individual songs), I believe that producing a great album has almost become a dying art. This was something the G.R.A.C.E. team and I used to constantly talk about and implemented first hand when it came to putting together our courses. These fantastics conversations were further continued with my good friend, Nicole Rose of Create Training (Compliance Officers, please do check out her stuff – it’s really quite phenomenal!) and rekindled my interest in doing something during this period. Hopefully, the final product will be a great listening experience – It’s hip hop and R&B so may not be everyone’s cup of tea! b) Hosting a weekly game show. During a cup of coffee with my 2 good friends Gary Ow and Suran Kularatna, the topic of lip-syncing came up and how it has become such a popular activity. We then asked ourselves – would a live version work in Singapore? So we tried it out!
Today, Lip Sync Showdown is now a regular fortnightly event where we have a lot of fun showcasing the nation’s lip-syncing talent. We have done 4 shows thus far and have a website here. For those of you based in Singapore or visiting, please do stop by!
c) Written a book. My good friend Steve Tunstall and I formed a book writing club with group of other friends where all we set ourselves a deadline to complete a book. Although I did not make the deadline, I have managed to complete around 90% and it should (hopefully) be available by the end of the year. My intention here is to provide an informative, yet geeky read that can be a value add and inspiration for the business leaders of tomorrow. Watch this space!
Now over to my professional pursuits. Currently, I sit on the boards for
a) ICFE Group of Companies. Fraud and Cybersecurity are 2 areas where I have significant personal interests. We have some interesting digital products and some exciting partnership announcements in the pipeline which I believe can significantly contribute to these ever growing spaces.
b) GRC Technology & Investments. Adrian Pay and I continue to look for new investment opportunities. Dynamic-GRC is starting to take off and I do suggest you sync up with him to find out more.
c) Game Lab X. What started out as a great salesperson-customer relationship has evolved into a great friendship with Byong Chon, who has done phenomenally well with this venture. Our game Killer Dash is a hit and we have already entertained 2 acquisition and 3 investment offers in less than a year!
d) Inzsure. I can now officially brag to the world that I started something with Steve and Johnny even though it’s really Tunstall and Lloyd, not Jobs and Ive. Insurtech is a dynamic space and having the team we have assembled puts us at a distinct advantage from a knowledge, innovation and contact base perspective. We are excited to launch later this year.
In addition to this, you may have also seen that I have also joined Datarama. We have a great and dynamic founding team comprising of Raphael Bouzy and the team at TC Capital. We have very much been in stealth mode working on an exciting Fintech/RegTech/M&A game-changing platform that we will be launching later this year.
Till now, I have deliberately avoided taking on a full time role. I said to myself that if I was to do so, I really need to be able to come in and make a difference internally and externally. The Future
So what’s on for the next 6 months? Well, I doubt any updates I have will equal the above but I promise I will try and provide them more frequently.
